Civil Aviation Resource Network, December 11, 2022: According to Reuters, Belgium will impose a new tax on relatively old and noisy aircraft, as well as private jets and short-haul flights to reduce noise and air pollution.
At present, aircraft taking off and landing at Brussels Airport must pay a tax based on the noise level produced during takeoff and landing. Small aircraft such as private jets have long been exempt.
The new tax system will come into effect on April 1, 2023, and the tax depends not only on the noise level, but also on the level of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions of the aircraft.
In addition, the Belgian government will also impose new taxes on flights of no more than 500 kilometers. "The noise pollution experienced by residents near Brussels National Airport cannot remain unchanged," said Georges Gilkinet, Belgium's deputy prime minister and transport minister.
