Civil Aviation Resources Network, June 4, 2025:

According to Reuters, several major US airlines, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Airlines, have applied to the FAA to postpone the implementation of the "Second Cockpit Safety Barrier" regulations, which will take effect in August this year, for two years.

In the petition submitted, the American Airlines Association (A4A) pointed out that the FAA has not yet approved any second cockpit safety barrier devices, nor has it authorized related operating manuals, operating procedures or training plans, so it requested a two-year postponement of implementation. The FAA said that it has launched a public comment process on this application, which will last until June 23.

Since the hijacking of four US planes on September 11, 2001, the FAA has strengthened the security standards for civil airliner cockpits. This new regulation is a further strengthening on this basis, requiring aircraft manufacturers to install "Second Cockpit Safety Barrier" on all new aircraft that will be used for US commercial passenger transportation to provide additional security protection when the cockpit door is opened.

Jason Ambrosi, president of the AirLine Pilots Association, strongly opposed the move: "We call on the FAA not to delay any further and to strictly follow the instructions of Congress to implement this regulation as soon as possible to ensure flight safety."

According to a federal law enacted in 2018, the FAA should have issued the regulation before 2019. However, the agency said that due to relevant procedural regulations, the new regulations can only be implemented after the necessary procedures are completed.
