Civil Aviation Resources Network, June 4, 2025: According to Skift, Alaska Airlines recently announced an important plan: the company will open a direct flight from Seattle to Rome, Italy in May 2026, which will be the first time Alaska Airlines enters the European market. The new route is planned to operate four flights per week, using Boeing 787-9, and tickets will go on sale this fall.

It is reported that to officially open the route, Alaska Airlines still needs the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to approve its combined fleet with Hawaiian Airlines to use a single operating license. Alaska Airlines said it expects to obtain the required operating license this fall.

In fact, the European expansion plan has long been in Alaska Airlines' strategic layout. In March this year, Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci said at an event that he planned to enter the European market in 2026.

At the investor conference held in December 2024, Alaska Airlines also released a future international route map, covering multiple international destinations such as London, Paris, Rome, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City.

It is worth mentioning that Alaska Airlines has opened the Seattle-Tokyo route in May 2025 and plans to start the Seattle-Seoul flight in September, showing that Alaska Airlines is accelerating its pace of expanding the international market.
