Civil Aviation Resource Network November 7, 2023 News: According to Reuters, British Virgin Atlantic will plan to operate the world’s first transatlantic commercial flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The UK Civil Aviation Authority on Monday granted Virgin Atlantic the license for the transatlantic flight, which was issued following a number of technical reviews by UK regulators, including the completion of a ground test on a Boeing 787-9's Trent 1000 engine. Tested, the relevant indicators are normal and meet expectations.
Virgin Atlantic now also needs to seek permission from regulators in the United States, Ireland and Canada.
In 2021, SAF will account for only 0.5% of aviation fuel, but many airlines aim to reach 10% by 2030, and for the industry to reach the "net zero" emissions target in 2050, SAF needs to account for 65% of aviation fuel.
