Civil Aviation Resource Network, May 17, 2024: According to Simpleflying reports, Spirit Aero Systems plans to lay off 450 people in order to cope with continued losses and slowdown in supply to Boeing.

Spirit spokesman Joe Buccino said in an emailed statement that reduced deliveries of 737 MAX fuselages and other parts "forces us to reduce our workforce" and that the company plans to notify affected employees in the coming weeks.

Reuters reported that Spirit has begun to restrict hiring due to the decline in 737 MAX production.

The layoffs will be carried out at the Wichita, Kansas plant, reducing the number of employees to 13,000. Spirit Airlines' first-quarter loss exceeded previous expectations. This is despite financial results for the first quarter of 2024 showing a 23% increase in net income ($1.7 billion in the first quarter of 2024 and $1.4 billion in the first quarter of 2023).
