On July 7, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that a man was arrested at Lisbon Airport in Portugal on Monday afternoon (July 6) at approximately 4:00 PM local time for allegedly assaulting a police officer. The man's attack was filmed by witnesses and uploaded to social media.

Portuguese police have confirmed that the man is an Irish national. Prior to this, he had also assaulted an airport employee, an incident also captured on video by bystanders.

In a statement, police said, "Through the Lisbon Airport Security and Border Control Department, police arrested the 26-year-old Irish man in the airport's baggage claim area."

"Shortly before police intervention, the suspect allegedly assaulted an employee of Menzies Aviation near a café on the fifth floor of the airport terminal," the statement added. "Upon arrival, the man displayed extreme violence and aggression, physically assaulting officers who attempted to maintain order and subdue him."

Police confirmed that the assault resulted in serious injuries to the officer, including external wounds and facial injuries, requiring medical treatment.

The man was subsequently transferred to a temporary detention facility in Lisbon.

The police statement emphasized, "Assaulting law enforcement officers is unacceptable and a violation of the lawful performance of police duties and the rule of law. Police will continue to resolutely combat such behavior and pursue criminal charges against perpetrators."

Portuguese Interior Minister Luís Neves commented on the incident, stating that the violence was "absolutely unacceptable."

The arrested man is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, local time.
