On July 3, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that a LATAM Airlines Airbus A320 (registration number CC-BLE) experienced a bird strike during takeoff from Montevideo Airport in Uruguay on Thursday, July 2nd. A bird was ingested into one of the engines, resulting in flames and sparks.
The aircraft was operating LATAM Airlines flight LA2399, flying from Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, to Lima, Peru.
Shortly after takeoff, a bird entered the right engine of the aircraft.
A video taken by a passenger shows flames and sparks erupting from the engine shortly after the incident.
Following the bird strike, the pilots declared an emergency and circled six times over the coast of Montevideo. The aircraft eventually returned to land safely 1 hour and 27 minutes after takeoff.
