Air India launches $400 million Boeing 787-8 fleet conversion program

Civil Aviation Resource Network, August 11, 2025: According to AeroTime, Air India has initiated a major refit of its widebody fleet as part of a $400 million fleet modernization program.
In July 2025, Air India's Boeing 787-8, registered VT-ANT, was delivered to Boeing's California factory for the first phase of the refit, with a second 787-8 scheduled to follow in October. According to an Air India statement released on August 10, both aircraft are expected to return to passenger service by December.
The modernization includes a full cabin refurbishment, including new seats in all classes, an advanced inflight entertainment system, updated carpets, curtains, soft furnishings, lavatories, and galleys.
In addition to the cabin upgrades, Air India is also implementing a reliability improvement program, upgrading avionics and other critical components across its entire 787-8 fleet in accordance with a Boeing Service Bulletin to reduce operational disruptions.
"Air India's B787-8 modification program will introduce a new three-class interior layout, including Business Class, Premium Economy Class, and Economy Class. These upgrades are in line with Air India's new product and customer experience standards," Air India said in a statement.
The modification program will cover all 26 B787-8 aircraft, seven of which will also undergo scheduled overhauls at the Victorville facility.
Air India also plans to begin modifying its 13 older Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in early 2027. However, it warned that due to supply chain delays, the expected completion date has been pushed back to October 2028.
