Civil Aviation Resources Network, August 11, 2025: According to the Daily Mail, a Qantas flight bound for Hong Kong was forced to return to Melbourne Airport shortly after takeoff on Sunday (August 10).
Flight QF29, an Airbus A330-300, took off from Melbourne just before 1 p.m. on Sunday when the crew requested a return. The flight landed 25 minutes after takeoff.
Qantas has not yet disclosed the specific nature of the problem, but confirmed that the decision was made out of an abundance of caution.
It is understood that the crew discovered a hydraulic or technical issue with the aircraft, which led to the flight disruption.
In a statement to the Daily Mail, Melbourne Airport said that, in accordance with aviation safety protocols, the airport declared a "local standby" status, a precautionary measure indicating that emergency assistance may be required.
Fire and rescue crews were already in place at the airport when the aircraft returned.
The aircraft landed safely without incident and was subsequently towed to the gate, where passengers disembarked without incident.
