According to an internal memo seen by AFP, starting Thursday (August 13), all Air India pilots will undergo mandatory drug screening.

This comes after an Air India captain involved in a mid-air descent incident tested positive for marijuana.

Current Indian regulations require airlines to randomly select at least 10% of their crew members annually for psychoactive substance testing.

The Air India memo states: "We have decided to conduct a comprehensive screening of all pilots within the group to check for any substances or drugs prohibited by current regulations."

"The testing is mandatory and will begin today."

On August 4, an Air India Airbus A320 aircraft flying from Phuket, Thailand to New Delhi suddenly dropped approximately 91 meters in altitude, injuring at least 24 passengers.

It was reported that the Air India captain involved had used marijuana and tested positive in a second confirmatory test.

Air India stated that they have not yet received the test results.

Indian investigators have not yet commented on the reports, but said they are closely investigating evidence related to the flight.
