Civil Aviation Resources Network, September 11, 2025: According to the South China Morning Post, executives at Malaysian low-cost airline AirAsia have expressed interest in purchasing China's C919 passenger aircraft as part of its strategy to tap into Southeast Asia's 700 million-person market and capitalize on growing commercial ties between China and ASEAN.
"We are in active discussions about purchasing the C919," Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia's parent company, Capital A, said at the Belt and Road Forum in Hong Kong on Wednesday.
"We are the first foreign airline to explore a C919 purchase agreement with COMAC," he added. COMAC is the manufacturer of the C919, which can carry up to 192 passengers and has a maximum range of 5,555 kilometers.
Fernandes did not disclose the size of the potential order, pricing, or other details.
As flight connections and economic ties expand within ASEAN and between ASEAN and China, the Chinese single-aisle airliner, designed to compete with the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families, is gaining increasing attention.
Data from China's civil aviation regulatory authorities show that the number of scheduled passenger flights between China and ASEAN countries has reached 2,552 per week, an increase of 8.3% over the same period last year.
