Civil Aviation Resources Network, July 28, 2025: According to Simple Flying, American Airlines and Porter Airlines intend to strengthen the cross-border route network between the United States and Canada through code-sharing cooperation. On July 25, 2025, the two airlines jointly submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for approval to implement a two-way comprehensive code-sharing service.

This move will enable American Airlines to gain an important Canadian partner and more effectively compete with cross-border code-sharing alliances such as Air Canada-United Airlines and Delta-WestJet Airlines.

Porter Airlines expands its U.S. market footprint

After government approval, the code-sharing agreement will help Porter Airlines expand its U.S. market coverage. According to the application documents submitted to the DOT, the two parties have identified specific routes that may be included in the code-sharing. As the actual carrier, Porter Airlines will implement code-sharing with American Airlines between the four major airports of Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Ottawa (YOW), Halifax (YHZ) and Montreal (YUL) and all its destinations in Canada. In terms of cross-border routes, the above four major Canadian airports to Porter Airlines' US destinations (except Boston (BOS), Newark (EWR), Washington Dulles (IAD) and Chicago Midway (MDW)) will all be included in the shared scope.

American Airlines strengthens its layout in Eastern Canada

Through this cooperation, American Airlines will significantly enhance its presence in the Canadian market, especially in Eastern Canada markets such as Toronto, Ottawa, Halifax and Montreal. At the same time, Porter Airlines passengers traveling to the United States can transfer through American Airlines' major hubs such as Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and Miami (MIA), which will help increase American Airlines' long-haul passenger traffic.

In addition, the alliance with Porter Airlines has given American Airlines a valuable Canadian partner to compete with cross-border code-sharing alliances such as Air Canada-United Airlines and Delta-WestJet.
