According to the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation, on February 4, 2026, a Turkish Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Istanbul experienced a right engine fire in mid-air, prompting an emergency declaration on board.
Flightradar24 data shows that flight TK727 departed Kathmandu (KTM) at 13:28 local time on February 4, bound for Istanbul (IST).

The aircraft was an Airbus A330-303 with registration number TC-LNG, originally scheduled to fly 5,317 kilometers with an average flight time of 7 hours and 44 minutes. However, shortly after takeoff, the flight changed its original westward route.

According to the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation, the flight was diverted because the crew reported a fire in the right engine. There were 236 people on board, including 225 passengers and 11 crew members.

Following the incident, the crew shut down the malfunctioning engine and diverted the aircraft to Kolkata's Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) instead of continuing to Istanbul.
Despite the emergency, the aircraft still had enough fuel to fly for several hours, enabling the crew to make a controlled diversion.
Gyanendra Bhul, deputy spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), told the Indian Express that the pilots promptly notified the Kathmandu air traffic control and shut down the malfunctioning engine. The aircraft then continued its flight to Kolkata with the engine off.

Airport officials declared a full state of emergency, and the plane landed safely in Kolkata at 15:03 local time. It is reported that no passengers or crew members were injured in the incident.
