On February 5, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) officially released the industry standard "Specific Requirements for the Air Transport of Dangerous Goods - Test Methods for Large Lithium Batteries" (MH/T1086-2026), which came into effect. This industry standard specifies the testing conditions, thermal safety tests, packaging tests, and test report requirements for the air transport of large lithium batteries. Its implementation will further improve the safety level and assurance capabilities of air transport of large power lithium batteries.
It is understood that, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) "Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air," large power lithium batteries weighing over 35 kg require special approval from the civil aviation authorities for air transport. Considering my country's status as a major producer and consumer of lithium batteries, the rapid development of the electric vehicle industry, and the strong demand for air transport of large power lithium batteries, the CAAC organized industry enterprises and research institutions, actively collaborating with upstream and downstream supply chain units to conduct research, fully considering the opinions of lithium battery manufacturers, lithium battery testing institutions, civil aviation management departments, airlines, and airports, and ultimately compiled and issued the "Specific Requirements for the Air Transport of Dangerous Goods - Test Methods for Large Lithium Batteries."
This industry standard applies to lithium battery manufacturers, testing and inspection institutions, and other entities conducting tests required for the air transport of large lithium batteries that necessitate special approvals. It sets forth testing requirements across multiple aspects, including transport conditions, thermal safety, and packaging, focusing on the safety of large lithium batteries under air transport conditions and in abnormal states such as thermal runaway and thermal diffusion, effectively ensuring the safety of large lithium batteries during air transport. The implementation of this industry standard will promote the development of related air cargo transport businesses, strongly support the export of domestically produced large-scale power lithium batteries, and provide a solid guarantee for my country's high-end manufacturing to participate in international competition.
