On October 19 (local time), an Airbus A320 aircraft operated by LATAM Peru experienced an engine fire while preparing for takeoff at Lima International Airport, prompting the flight crew to abort the takeoff.
Flight LA2302, scheduled to depart from Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport for Piura, was accelerating toward takeoff when flames erupted from its left engine.
Passengers observed the fire near the left engine through their cabin windows, with the interior illuminated by an orange-yellow glow; the flight crew immediately initiated an aborted takeoff.
Footage from the scene shows intense flames spewing from the left engine, subsequently spreading to the left landing gear and wing.
The captain informed passengers via the public address system that the takeoff had been aborted due to a malfunction in the left landing gear. Assuring them that the situation was under control, the captain instructed passengers to keep their seatbelts fastened, remain in their seats, and follow the directions of the cabin crew.
Airport fire crews arrived on the scene and extinguished the blaze. Passengers were subsequently evacuated as a precautionary measure; no injuries have been reported.
LATAM stated that Flight LA2302 encountered an "unexpected technical incident" prior to takeoff. As a safety precaution, the airline opted to disembark the passengers and is currently assisting them in rebooking on other flights. The specific cause of the incident will be determined through a technical assessment conducted in accordance with established procedures.
