On October 18, China Eastern Airlines and Royal Air Maroc, the national flag carrier of the Kingdom of Morocco, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Shanghai. This signing marks a new milestone in the strategic partnership between the two airlines. Both parties will focus on strengthening air transport connections between China and Africa and further explore opportunities for deeper cooperation across route networks.
According to the MOU, China Eastern Airlines and Royal Air Maroc will initiate a special proportion-sharing agreement and establish a codeshare partnership. Through these collaborative initiatives, the two parties aim to integrate route resources, provide passengers from both countries with more diverse travel options, and enhance the convenience and flexibility of intercontinental travel.
Since the beginning of this year, China Eastern Airlines has continued to increase routes between China and Morocco. Its subsidiary, Shanghai Airlines, launched the Shanghai-Marseille-Casablanca route on January 19, 2025, with three weekly flights. On September 25 of the same year, it further launched a direct Shanghai-Casablanca route, increasing the frequency between Shanghai and Casablanca to four flights per week. Shanghai Airlines plans to gradually increase the number of direct flights to further strengthen air connectivity between China, Morocco, and Africa. At the same time, Royal Air Maroc also resumed its first direct flight from Morocco to China, Casablanca-Beijing, on January 20, 2025. Currently operating three flights per week, it provides a convenient air link for passengers traveling between China and Morocco.
As a Shanghai-based airline, China Eastern Airlines relies on the Shanghai International Aviation Hub, while Royal Air Maroc boasts a strong presence throughout Africa. The two airlines' route networks are highly complementary, offering promising prospects for cooperation. This deepening of strategic cooperation between the two parties in the China-Africa air travel market will drive steady growth in tourist traffic between the two regions, provide transportation support for deepening economic and trade exchanges between Asia and Africa, and highlight the strategic value of their cooperation for regional development.
