1. Spirit Airlines to lay off another 365 pilots

Spirit Airlines said Thursday it will lay off 365 pilots and demote up to 170 pilots in the first quarter of 2026. Spirit Airlines is currently undergoing larger layoffs as part of its restructuring plan. After filing for bankruptcy for the second time in August, the ultra-low-cost airline told its pilots union that it wanted to cut annual pilot-related expenses by $100 million to conserve cash.

2. United Airlines Believes US Government Shutdown Impacts Travel Confidence

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby warned Thursday that a prolonged government shutdown would negatively impact flight bookings and operations. The US government shutdown, now in its third week due to a political deadlock over government funding, has exacerbated a chronic air traffic controller shortage and caused occasional delays in some US cities.

3. Lufthansa's Discover fleet to grow to 40 aircraft by 2028

Discover, a leisure-focused subsidiary of Lufthansa Group, announced Thursday plans to expand its fleet to 40 aircraft by mid-2028, including the addition of four Airbus A350-900s. These aircraft will enable Discover to open new routes to destinations not accessible with its existing A330 fleet.

4. Woman assaults flight attendant, forcing Alaska Airlines flight to divert

Alaska Airlines announced that a female passenger was arrested on suspicion of assaulting two flight attendants, an incident that forced the flight to divert. The company stated in a statement that Alaska Airlines Flight 1057, en route from Portland to Dallas, experienced a "security incident" early Tuesday morning when a woman physically assaulted two flight attendants, forcing the flight to divert to Boise, Idaho.

5. A 737 Max 8 made an emergency landing after a cracked windshield.

On the morning of October 16th, a United Airlines flight from Denver to Los Angeles safely made an emergency landing at Salt Lake City International Airport due to a cracked windshield. A United Airlines spokesperson stated that the aircraft involved was a Boeing 737 Max 8, and that maintenance teams would conduct a comprehensive inspection and make necessary repairs.

6. Virgin Australia launched Australia's first "Pet in Cabin" flight.

On October 17th, Virgin Australia launched its first in-cabin pet transportation service in Australia. It is currently available on routes from Melbourne to the Gold Coast and Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast. The service will operate on a trial basis until January 30, 2026, with plans to expand it to all eligible Virgin Australia domestic routes by the end of 2026.
