On June 13, China announced that it would include New Zealand in the scope of unilateral visa-free countries, which will further promote personnel, economic and trade exchanges between the two sides and benefit the development of inbound tourism.
Half an hour after the announcement, the popularity of China-related keywords searched by New Zealand tourists on Trip.com, Ctrip's international version, increased by 65% compared with the previous day. Since the beginning of this year, popular destinations for New Zealand tourists to China include Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Xi'an, Nanjing, and Changsha.
Qin Jing, vice president of Ctrip Group, said that New Zealand and China are important destinations and sources of tourists to each other. Since December last year, direct flights between China and New Zealand have returned to pre-epidemic levels, which has provided support for the growth of the number of tourists on both sides. Since the beginning of this year, New Zealand's inbound tourism orders have increased by nearly 60% year-on-year, ranking as the 15th largest source of inbound tourism in China. The rapid recovery of inbound tourism is a highlight of the tourism market this year. Ctrip will further seize the policy dividends, continue to leverage its brand, technology and resource advantages, tell the Chinese story to the world, and promote the improvement of the full-link experience of inbound tourism, including communication, payment, tickets, network, accommodation, etc., through inbound tourism cooperation alliances, online and offline ticketing services, overseas social media communication and other methods, to help revitalize inbound tourism.
On the Qunar platform, New Zealand is an "advanced version" route for outbound tourism, and the unique scenery of the southern hemisphere has attracted many senior travelers. At present, China and New Zealand have resumed many routes, and the planned flight volume has exceeded the same period in 2019. The passenger volume is expected to return to the pre-epidemic level during the summer vacation. At present, Air China, China Eastern Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, etc. all have direct flights to Auckland, and can also transfer to Hong Kong through Cathay Pacific and Air New Zealand, making the two journeys more comfortable. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Haikou and other cities can all fly directly to Auckland. The total price of round-trip air tickets from Beijing to Auckland during the summer vacation is about 5,000 yuan.
For outbound tourism, New Zealand is an advanced destination. In the past, when passengers flew to Australia, they usually chose the Australia + New Zealand route. This year, there are more passengers flying directly to New Zealand, and the post-90s and family travel are the main groups. In terms of the length of stay, most travelers will spend 6-9 days in New Zealand, experiencing the unique climate and natural landscape of the southern hemisphere, getting close to alpacas, watching penguins, and experiencing Maori culture, which is a unique travel experience in New Zealand.
From the perspective of passengers, as of June 12, the number of air ticket bookings to New Zealand has increased by more than 2 times year-on-year. Chinese tourists have booked to visit many cities in New Zealand, including Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown, Wanaka, Wellington, and Rotorua. The 9-day tour of New Zealand's North and South Islands and the 6-day tour of the North Island are popular routes this summer. Passengers can visit glowworm caves, explore Hobbit villages, watch glaciers and penguin habitats, etc. The number of bookings for related tourism products has increased by 3 times year-on-year.
Since last year, China has unilaterally exempted visas for many countries, which has significantly promoted inbound tourism. Ctrip data shows that in the first quarter of this year, the number of Singaporean tourists who can enter China visa-free increased 10 times year-on-year, the number of Malaysian tourists increased 9 times year-on-year, and the number of tourists from France, Spain and Thailand all increased by about 4 times year-on-year.
