Common to global civil aviation and widely recognized by the international community! What functions does the Beidou system have?
According to CCTV News Client, the Beidou Satellite Navigation System has officially joined the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and become a common satellite navigation system for global civil aviation. This means that the Beidou System's ability to provide global services has been widely recognized by the international community. In order to meet the requirements of global civil aviation, ICAO needs to verify the functions and performance of the Beidou system. How to carry out these verifications? What functions does the Beidou system have?
Common to global civil aviation, the performance of the Beidou system has been widely recognized
When the reporter came to the National Key Laboratory of Air-Ground Integrated New Navigation System Technology near Beihang University, the head of the laboratory, Zhu Yanbo, was leading the team to carry out related research in the aviation field. He gave a demonstration to the reporter.

Zhu Yanbo, deputy director of the National Key Laboratory of Air-Ground Integrated New Navigation System Technology: We are currently conducting two tests. The first is a ground-based enhancement system based on Beidou, which provides enhanced functions for aircraft take-off and landing guidance at the airport. The second task is the evaluation of UAV flight test data. We evaluate and analyze the space signals of the Beidou satellite navigation system collected by the UAV to determine whether it meets our aviation performance service requirements.
As one of the earliest representative members to participate in the ICAO Navigation System Expert Group Meeting, Zhu Yanbo witnessed the Beidou system's continuous development process from scratch. He told reporters that to pass the "big test" of ICAO standards, the Beidou system must not only have global coverage capabilities and perform accurate and reliable positioning and navigation on a global scale, but also need continuous performance monitoring to verify its anti-interference performance and compatibility with other satellite systems.
In accordance with the requirements of the ICAO Navigation System Expert Group, the technical verification passed by the Beidou system involves a total of 189 technical indicators, fully covering various aspects such as accuracy, availability, reliability, coverage and anti-interference performance, thus fully proving that the Beidou system Meet the requirements for safe operation of civil aviation.
Wang Zhipeng, Director of the Department of Aeronautical Information Engineering at Beihang University: We use Beidou and GPS to form a dual-frequency multi-constellation mode, which increases the number of visible satellites and improves positioning accuracy. In busy aviation terminal areas, airspace capacity can be increased, operational efficiency improved, and flight delays reduced.
Collaborative advancement to enhance the international competitiveness of my country's civil aviation industry
As an industry with a high degree of internationalization, the civil aviation industry needs to operate under the guidance of unified global standards and has strict safety requirements for satellite navigation systems that provide global civil aviation services. After the Beidou system joins the ICAO standard and becomes a common satellite navigation system for global civil aviation, it can realize independent control of navigation sources and improve the level of safe operation of civil aviation.
Wang Zhipeng, Director of the Department of Aeronautical Information Engineering at Beihang University: From a safety perspective, the autonomous and controllable Beidou satellite navigation system is used. First of all, we have credible spatio-temporal information, which is a basis for the safe operation of civil aviation. In addition, Beidou has its own unique short message function that can track flights.
As early as 2010, the Civil Aviation Administration of my country officially submitted an application for the Beidou Satellite Navigation System to enter the ICAO standard, and together with the China Satellite Navigation System Management Office, formed a full-chain working team integrating industry, academia, research and other relevant units. , systematically promote the verification tasks of various indicators. Over the past thirteen years, after more than 50 technical discussions and more than 2,000 questions answered, the verification of all technical indicators of the Beidou system was finally successfully completed.
In the process of promoting the Beidou system to join ICAO standards, relevant departments have accumulated rich experience in technical indicator verification and international communication and coordination. This has not only deepened the understanding of all parties about the civil aviation application requirements of the Beidou system, but also contributed to improving the international competition of my country's civil aviation. Strength and voice have played a driving role. Up to now, Beidou system has served users in more than 200 countries and regions around the world, and its global service capabilities have been widely recognized.
Li Li, Director of the Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Division of the Air Traffic Control Office of the Civil Aviation Administration of China: In the next step, we need to focus our efforts on further developing our industrial standards and product standards based on ICAO standards, and in accordance with relevant industrial standards and Product standard design and development of receivers for Beidou airborne navigation equipment to enable installation and use on aircraft.
