Civil Aviation Resources Network, July 21, 2025: Delta Air Lines is said to be close to signing a wide-body aircraft order with Boeing, with the 787-10 Dreamliner being the preferred model. According to One Mile At A Time and aviation industry insider JonNYC, the Atlanta-based airline could announce the deal in late 2025 or early 2026.
The rumor comes as Delta seeks to update its long-haul fleet and phase out older Boeing 767-300ER aircraft; these are part of Delta's overall wide-body aircraft strategy.
During the fourth quarter 2023 earnings call, Delta Air Lines management confirmed plans to phase out the Boeing 767-300ER fleet by 2030, with international long-haul service to be phased out by 2028. According to ch-aviation data, Delta currently relies mainly on its Airbus wide-body fleet, including 38 Airbus A350-900, 36 Airbus A330neo, 31 Airbus A330-300 and 11 Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
In January 2024, Delta Air Lines confirmed an order for 20 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft and retained the option to purchase another 20. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2026, and these aircraft will gradually replace Delta's 767 aircraft. However, JonNYC pointed out that Delta Airlines does not expect to start receiving A350-1000s until early 2027.
In addition, JonNYC said that Delta Airlines is likely to order Boeing 787-10 in late 2025 or early 2026. The rumor was echoed by a report from One Mile At A Time, where Tim Dunn noted that his sources also predict that Delta will move forward with the Boeing 787 order. According to Dunn, the 787-10 is becoming the preferred model.
While Delta's Boeing 787-10 order is still speculative, there are several reasons why it would make sense for Delta. The 787-10 Dreamliner doesn't have the same range as the popular 787-9, but it excels on medium-range, high-traffic routes, making it a good fit for Delta's network, such as transatlantic routes from New York's JFK to London's Heathrow or Atlanta to Paris' Charles de Gaulle.
In addition, Delta doesn't need another ultra-long-range, high-capacity aircraft, as it has already ordered the Airbus A350-1000 and is awaiting delivery of another six A350-900s.
Of the three models in the 787 family, the 787-10 offers the highest passenger capacity but the shortest range. According to Boeing, the 787-10 can carry 336 passengers in a two-class configuration and has a maximum range of 6,330 nautical miles (11,730 kilometers). In comparison, the 787-9 can carry a maximum of 296 passengers, while the 787-8 can carry 248 passengers.
