Civil Aviation Resources Network, March 20, 2025: According to Reuters, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Wednesday that by the end of 2026, 74 airports will be equipped with enhanced runway safety equipment to help detect runway incursions.
The FAA is deploying the device, a memory aid for air traffic controllers that indicates whether a runway is occupied. Currently, the system is in use at four airports and will be installed at another 70 airports in the next 19 months.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said earlier in the day that he plans to announce a plan to reform the U.S. air traffic control system in the coming days to replace aging technology.
On January 29, a U.S. Army helicopter collided with an American Airlines regional airliner near Reagan Washington National Airport, killing 67 people. The accident once again raised public concerns about aviation safety.
Duffy said last week that he plans to ask Congress for hundreds of billions of dollars to advance reforms to the air traffic control system. The U.S. Government Accountability Office has warned that the FAA must take urgent action to address the aging of the air traffic control system, with about a third of the system close to failure.

The FAA announced in October last year that it would conduct an audit of runway incursion risks at the 45 busiest airports in the United States.
