According to AFP, a volcano in eastern Indonesia has erupted repeatedly in recent days, sending ash plumes thousands of meters into the air. Authorities raised the alert to its highest level last night (September 19th), and a local airport suspended flights on the 20th.

The twin-peaked volcano on Flores Island, whose southern peak, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, stands at 1,584 meters, has been erupting repeatedly since last night local time. The volcanic monitoring agency said in a statement that the largest eruption, at 10:46 a.m., sent volcanic material 6,000 meters above the crater.

Volcanic activity continued this morning, with monitoring agencies recording multiple eruptions, including one that sent an ash plume as high as 2,500 meters.

The eruption occurred after monitoring agencies raised the volcano's alert level to the highest level, Level 4, last night.

Muhammad Wafid, head of Indonesia's geological agency, warned residents and tourists to stay at least 6 kilometers away from the crater, saying volcanic ash could affect airport operations.

"If volcanic ash from the south peak of Mount Levotobi spreads to airports and flight paths, it could affect normal airport operations and flight movements," he said in a statement.

In response to the eruption, the domestic airport in Maumer, Flores Island, has suspended operations.
