1. Lufthansa Sells Two 747-8s to the US Air Force
According to reports, Lufthansa has sold two Boeing 747-8 aircraft (registration numbers D-ABYD and D-ABYG) to the US Air Force. By the third quarter of 2026, Lufthansa's fleet of this aircraft type will decrease from 19 to 17. Lufthansa is currently one of only three airlines still operating flights with the 747-8.
2. Ryanair CEO Plans to Retire by 2035
Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary recently revealed that he plans to step down from his leadership position at Europe's largest low-cost carrier by 2035. O'Leary stated that he will step down from his current position within the next five to ten years, allowing a "better" successor to take over. O'Leary became Ryanair CEO in 1994.
3. 28 Vietnamese Aircraft Grounded Due to Global Engine Crisis
Vietnam's aviation industry is struggling to cope with operational pressures as engine shortages force the grounding of numerous aircraft. Tạ Minh Trọng, Director of the Flight Safety Standards Department of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), revealed that 28 commercial aircraft in Vietnam are currently grounded due to engine shortages.
4. Air New Zealand Cabin Crew Cancel Christmas Strike
Air New Zealand has confirmed that its short-haul flight crews have canceled their planned strike. Previously, Air New Zealand reached an agreement in principle with the union representing its more than 400 cabin crew members, thus avoiding flight disruptions ahead of the busiest travel season of the year.
5. TSA and ICE Share Passenger Data, Turning US Airports into Deportation Zones
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has expanded its use of airline passenger data, allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to make arrests at US airports, including on domestic routes. Airlines and departure points are now part of an operational process in which booking data collected for security checks is also used to identify travelers who may be deported.
6. Canada Tests Digital Visa, Potentially Changing How Travelers Enter the Country
Canada has begun testing a secure digital visa, an electronic version of the physical visa stub affixed to a traveler's passport. The pilot program allows granted entry travelers to store their visas on a mobile device and present them to airlines and border officials for verification during their trip.
