1. US Government Shutdown Enters 27th Day, Over 5,600 Flights Delayed
As the US government shutdown entered its 27th day, the number of absent air traffic controllers surged, exacerbating the chaos in air travel. On Monday, over 5,600 flights were delayed across the US. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed ground delay controls on Newark Liberty International Airport, Austin International Airport, and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, citing staff shortages.
2. Delta Air Lines CEO: Daily Losses from Government Shutdown Less Than $1 Million
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian stated on Monday that the US government shutdown has had a "minor" impact on the company, with daily losses less than $1 million, but the shortage of airport security personnel is more worrying. "What's more worrying is whether the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) can ensure that security checkpoints are adequately staffed," Bastian told Reuters on the sidelines of the Fortune Global Forum in Riyadh.
3. Airbus Delays Part of A220 Assembly Plans
Three industry sources said on Monday that Airbus has delayed the assembly of some smaller A220 aircraft this year and next, and may not achieve its target of producing 14 A220s per month until the last few weeks of 2026. The sources also said that Airbus has long stated that it will reach its target of 14 aircraft per month by 2026, but supply chain issues have caused this milestone to be expected to be achieved no earlier than December 2026.
4. EU Report: Europe's 2030 SAF Usage Target "Steady Progress"
An EU report shows that the European aviation industry is currently "steadily progressing" on its target of achieving at least 6% alternative aviation fuel usage by 2030. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) released its annual report on the use of alternative fuels (SAF), noting that the newly enacted EU Aviation Renewable Fuel Regulation has "stimulated an increase in SAF production within the EU."
5. Aeroflot Warns of Sharp Domestic Ticket Price Increases
Aeroflot has warned of a sharp increase in domestic ticket prices. The company's average ticket price has already risen by 6% in the first half of 2025, but this is just the beginning-prices are expected to rise further. The price increase stems from a rapid rise in aircraft operating and passenger service costs. Furthermore, the technical condition of Aeroflot's aircraft is deteriorating: due to spare parts shortages and maintenance difficulties caused by sanctions, the number of aircraft malfunctions and emergency landings is increasing.
6. Alaska Airlines IT Failure May Cost It $26 Million
The IT failure that grounded Alaska Airlines' fleet for eight hours last week and canceled approximately 400 flights may cost the airline $26 million. Savanthi Syth, an aviation analyst at financial services firm Raymond James, estimates that the outage will reduce Alaska Airlines' earnings per share by about 15 cents, or about $26 million less in pre-tax income in the fourth quarter.
