CCTV News reporters learned from the Central and Southern Air Traffic Management Bureau that the East Control Tower of the Bureau officially commenced operation today (October 28th), providing crucial support for the opening of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport's Terminal 3 and fifth runway on October 30th. In the future, Baiyun Airport will become the first airport in China with five operational runways and two control towers operating simultaneously.
The East Control Tower, standing 72.1 meters tall, is located north of Terminal 3. Its "flower stamen" design complements the terminal's "crown" shape, while the tower's gradient linear elements are inspired by aircraft contrails. In the future, the East Control Tower will work in conjunction with the West Control Tower to ensure the efficient operation of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport's five operational runways. Specifically, the East Control Tower will primarily be responsible for aircraft taxiing in the newly built East Flight Area and for the control of takeoffs and landings on the fifth runway; the West Control Tower will primarily be responsible for aircraft taxiing in the existing four runway area and for the control of takeoffs and landings on the runway.
The newly launched East Tower operates the Tower Operations Management System (TOMS), independently developed by the Central and Southern Air Traffic Management Bureau of the Civil Aviation Administration of China. This system integrates various civil aviation operational information, including aeronautical information, meteorological data, and airport surface monitoring, promoting the digitalization and automation of tower workflows. Specifically designed for the five-runway, dual-tower operation, the system has been upgraded with new functions such as path recognition-based handover relationships, dual release, and dual shift supervisors, contributing to improved air traffic control efficiency.
