The Japan Transport Safety Board (RTSB) recently submitted a new report to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The report indicates that in the collision between a Japan Coast Guard aircraft and a Japan Airlines A350 at Haneda Airport on January 2, 2024, the loudspeaker on the JAL A350 had insufficient effective coverage.
The report states that after the accident, the JAL A350's in-flight public address system malfunctioned, forcing the crew to use the loudspeaker to evacuate passengers. However, the loudspeaker's sound was difficult to hear, forcing some passengers to rely on observing others' actions to evacuate. Some flight attendants, finding the loudspeaker ineffective, subsequently stopped using it.
On May 26, 2025, the RSB conducted a verification test on the same model of A350 aircraft using the same loudspeaker.
The test simulated aircraft engine noise and the chaotic environment of an emergency evacuation. The results showed that even under ideal operating conditions, this model of loudspeaker had significant limitations in performance and could not effectively transmit commands from the front cabin to the rear cabin; in actual emergencies (such as fire, passenger shouts, engine noise), its effectiveness would be further affected.

Given that this type of loudspeaker is not only used on the A350 but also on other aircraft, similar problems could occur on other models as well.
The Japan Transport Safety Board has submitted relevant information to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and recommended that countermeasures be studied.
The investigation into the impact of the loudspeaker problem on the emergency evacuation following the collision at Haneda Airport is ongoing.
On January 2, 2024, a Japan Coast Guard DHC-8-315 aircraft collided with a Japan Airlines A350 passenger plane at Haneda International Airport. Five people on board the DHC-8-315 aircraft died, and the captain was seriously injured. The Japan Airlines A350 evacuated 379 people on board; one passenger was seriously injured, four passengers sustained minor injuries, and 12 passengers received medical examinations due to illness. The aircraft was severely damaged.
