Passengers sue Alaska Airlines after plane engine nearly shuts down
According to CCTV News, three passengers on an Alaska Airlines flight sued the airline operator on November 2 because the engine of the plane they were traveling on was almost shut down by an off-duty pilot. These passengers believe Alaska Airlines violated its duty to ensure flight safety.
The three passengers said they were filing a class action lawsuit on behalf of all passengers on the flight. The prosecution also named Alaska Airlines subsidiary Horizon Airlines as a defendant because the flight in question was operated by the latter. Passengers on the flight are demanding that Alaska Airlines and Horizon Airlines publicly explain why pilots who entered the cockpit did not undergo preflight safety checks.
On October 22, an off-duty pilot of Horizon Air, a subsidiary of Alaska Airlines, tried to shut down the engine of his flight, but was restrained by the crew. The passenger plane was eventually safely diverted to another airport without any casualties. The pilot involved, Joseph David Emerson, was charged with attempted murder and many other charges, but he claimed to suffer from mental illness and had eaten hallucinogenic mushrooms 48 hours before the incident.
According to media reports, Emerson was not flying that day. As a standby pilot, he was chatting with the pilot in the cockpit when he suddenly yelled and rushed forward to try to activate the fire protection system. If he succeeded, it would cause the passenger plane's engine to shut down. After a 30-second struggle, Emerson failed to pull the fire handle and was then twisted to the rear of the passenger plane. As the plane descended, Emerson tried to pull the emergency exit handle, but was stopped by the crew.
The flight involved carried a total of 4 crew members and 80 passengers. The prosecution requested compensation for air tickets and mental damages, and also sought to force Alaska Airlines and Horizon Airlines to conduct checks on all on-duty and off-duty crew members, including "mental health" checks.
