According to Shangguan News, on February 17th, the first day of the Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse), Shanghai Pudong International Airport was filled with a festive atmosphere. Just after midnight, flight 5J678 from Manila landed smoothly in Shanghai. Dawson and his girlfriend Kaye from the UK successfully completed immigration procedures, becoming the first passengers to enjoy the new visa-free policy between China and the UK at Shanghai ports. This marks the official implementation of China's visa-free policy for holders of ordinary passports from Canada and the UK.
"My Chinese friends told me about the visa-free policy and even invited me to experience the Spring Festival. 30 days visa-free is fantastic! We plan to travel to Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Beijing," Dawson excitedly shared his Spring Festival travel plans with the immigration police on duty.
Condie Adam, a Canadian engineer working in China, also felt the convenience brought by the new policy. He told reporters that he and his wife had just returned from a vacation in Phuket when they heard the good news. "I've worked in China for many years, and it's become my second home. Now my parents won't need visas to visit me anymore, which is so convenient."
Since February 17th, China has implemented a visa-free policy for holders of ordinary passports from Canada and the UK. Holders of ordinary passports from these countries can enter China without a visa for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, exchanges, or transit for up to 30 days. This measure not only further expands China's visa-free network but also injects new vitality into people-to-people exchanges between China and other countries.
During the 2026 Spring Festival holiday, passenger traffic at Shanghai airport ports continued to rise, with an average daily volume of 113,000 passengers. With the release of the visa-free policy benefits, it is expected that even more foreign travelers will come to China for tourism, family visits, and business.
According to statistics, since the beginning of this year, Shanghai border inspection authorities have inspected a total of 636,000 foreign passengers, an increase of 30.3% year-on-year. Of these, 414,000 foreign passengers entered China enjoying visa-free entry and the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, accounting for 64.6% of the total number of foreign passengers entering the country.
To ensure the smooth implementation of the new policy, the Shanghai Airport Border Inspection Station optimized its clearance procedures in advance, using its self-developed information system to analyze passenger flow in real time and dynamically adjust inspection channel settings to ensure "immediate processing upon arrival and early peak relief" during peak periods. Simultaneously, it innovatively implemented classified and zoned inspection for foreigners, continued to promote online completion of foreigner entry cards, and distributed "Airline Service Manuals" to airlines to strengthen policy promotion and ground service training. Furthermore, it deployed an additional "100-person foreign language volunteer service team" of police officers to be on-site 24 hours a day and opened the "12367" immigration service hotline, operating 24/7, providing multi-channel, all-weather, multilingual entry and exit business consultation services to improve the convenience for foreigners coming to China.
