On July 19, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that on July 16 local time, the presidential plane carrying South African President Cyril Ramaphosa experienced a technical malfunction en route to Durban and was forced to return to its origin. As a result, Ramaphosa was unable to attend a public event scheduled for that day.
Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenia stated that the presidential plane returned due to a technical malfunction, but did not provide further details.
The South African presidential aircraft is named "Inkwazi," which means "osprey" in Zulu. The Inkwazi is a converted Boeing 737-700 business jet, 25.3 years old, and was delivered to the South African Air Force in 2001. It primarily serves as the official flight aircraft for the South African president and his entourage.
In recent years, the Inkwazi has repeatedly disrupted presidential travel due to technical problems.
In February 2025, the Inkwazi was grounded due to a crack in the cockpit windshield, forcing President Ramaphosa to travel on other South African Air Force aircraft. In November of the same year, the Inkwazi underwent maintenance, allowing Ramaphosa to travel on commercial flights during his European trip.
In May of this year, Ramaphosa was scheduled to attend the centennial celebrations of Kruger National Park, but was unable to attend due to a malfunction in the presidential aircraft.
