On March 14, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that Sanya's tourism market remained hot as the first Spring Festival travel rush after the Hainan Free Trade Port's official opening. Sanya Phoenix International Airport (hereinafter referred to as "Sanya Airport"), under Hainan Holdings, focused on the goal of "safe, convenient, and warm" Spring Festival travel, successfully completing various support tasks through strengthened guarantees, pragmatic measures, and optimized services, achieving a stable start to safe operation and a strong start to transportation production. During the Spring Festival travel rush (February 2 to March 13), Sanya Airport handled a total of 18,000 flight takeoffs and landings, transporting over 3.57 million passengers. Overall operation was stable and orderly, with flight takeoffs and landings and passenger throughput increasing by 1.0% and 4.6% year-on-year, respectively. On February 14 and 25, the airport handled 166 wide-body aircraft flights each day, setting a new record since its opening and ranking among the top in the country. It is worth mentioning that during the nine-day Spring Festival holiday (February 15th to 23rd), Sanya Airport experienced a peak in passenger traffic, handling 4,080 flights and transporting over 845,000 passengers. On February 21st (the fifth day of the Lunar New Year), the single-day passenger throughput approached 100,000, setting a new record for the same period.
To cope with the surge in passenger traffic during the Spring Festival travel rush, Sanya Airport leveraged the opening of Terminal 3 to efficiently coordinate the operational resources of Terminals 1, 2, and 3, effectively diverting passengers and alleviating pressure on flight operations. To date, 10 airlines, including Hainan Airlines, West Air, and Tianjin Airlines, have relocated their operations to Terminal 3. During the Spring Festival travel rush, Terminal 3 handled over 3,400 flights and served over 730,000 passengers, accounting for approximately 19% and 20% of Sanya Airport's total operations, respectively. This effectively alleviated the pressure on Terminals 1 and 2, improved operational efficiency, and enhanced the passenger travel experience.
In terms of route network expansion, Sanya Airport, in conjunction with various airlines, has continuously optimized capacity allocation and expanded its route network. On the one hand, it has increased the deployment of wide-body aircraft on routes to key source markets, improving passenger comfort and capacity supply. On the other hand, it has launched the new "Sanya-Dazhou-Lhasa" route, further opening up regional air corridors and facilitating cross-regional travel. Meanwhile, the first direct fifth-freedom scheduled passenger route from Hainan Free Trade Port to Europe, "Frankfurt-Bangkok-Sanya," operated 28 flights during the Spring Festival travel season. The first seventh-freedom passenger route in my country, representing the highest level of air rights liberalization, "Sanya-Prague," operated 6 flights during the Spring Festival travel season. The newly launched "Sanya-Irkutsk" international route provides more choices for international passengers and facilitates travel and cultural exchanges between China and other countries.
Regarding flight regularity management, Sanya Airport, based on the overall situation of aviation operations in the Hainan region and relying on the Hainan Regional Transportation Coordination Committee platform, has strengthened cross-regional and cross-unit collaboration. Through active coordination, the policy of exemption from airspace restrictions in the Guangzhou-Shenzhen area during the Spring Festival travel rush was successfully implemented. Taking advantage of the policy dividends of the opening of nine temporary air routes in Hainan, the four temporary routes related to the airport were utilized in particular, effectively releasing airspace resources and injecting strong momentum into the efficient operation of flights.

Regarding passenger services, Sanya Airport closely focused on the high-frequency scenarios and core needs of passengers during the Spring Festival travel rush, launching nine heartwarming service measures to help passengers travel smoothly. During peak hours, the airport dynamically increased the number of check-in counters, increased the frequency of announcements, opened a dedicated "no-baggage" channel, and proactively guided passengers nearing check-in, effectively preventing missed flights. The airport proactively disseminated information through the Civil Aviation Administration of Sanya's News and Information Management Committee platform, releasing information such as ticket availability reminders, travel tips, transfer guidance, and passenger flow forecasts through various channels to improve passenger travel efficiency. The airport also collaborated with commercial promotions, partnering with duty-free shops to launch activities such as lucky draws, check-in events, and the distribution of consumer vouchers. Interactive activities such as a lion dance flash mob performance and a "Happy Year of the Horse" themed check-in point were held in the terminal to create a pleasant travel experience for passengers.
During this Spring Festival travel rush, Sanya Airport successfully completed its mission with solid safety management, high-quality service, and a strong festive atmosphere. Next, Sanya Airport will summarize its experience in ensuring smooth Spring Festival travel, continuously optimize its hardware facilities, further expand the aviation market, focus on building a service brand, and solidly advance various key tasks to build a more efficient and convenient "air bridge" for the high-level opening up of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
