Four major U.S. airlines


Southwest Airlines reported a record quarterly profit excluding exceptional items of $825 million, with liquidity of $17.4 billion, far exceeding its $10.5 billion in debt. Operating income for the second quarter also hit an all-time high of $6.7 billion, up 13.9% compared to the same period in 2019. Operating income per available seat mile (RASM) increased 22%, driven by 18.4% passenger yield and 0.7% increase in load factor.


American Airlines announced its Q2 financial report. The data showed that American Airlines’ Q2 revenue was US$13.4 billion, a year-on-year increase of 79.5% and an increase of 12.2% over the same period in 2019. Net income was $476 million, compared with $19 million a year earlier. It was the first quarterly profit for American without government aid since the outbreak.

Delta Air Lines reported a Q2 profit of $735 million, 49% less than the same period in 2019. Delta expects Q3 capacity to fall by 15% to 17% from 2019 levels, and expects revenue to rise by 1% to 5% from 2019 levels.


International Airlines Group IAG


Led by demand for flights in Spain and Latin America, British airline group IAG announced its return to profitability for the first time since the outbreak. IAG’s operating profit in the second quarter was 293 million euros ($299.56 million), compared with an operating loss of 967 million euros in the same period in 2021.


IAG said its passenger capacity reached 78% of 2019 levels in the second quarter of this year and will continue to grow steadily for the rest of 2022. IAG also forecast passenger capacity in the third quarter to be around 80% of 2019 levels and around 85% in the fourth quarter.


Etihad Airways


Etihad Airways released its financial reports and operating results for the first half of 2022, with a record profit of $296 million in core business operations (H1 2021: loss of $392 million).


Etihad Airways' passenger traffic in the first half of 2022 was 4.02 million, an increase of more than 3 million compared with 980,000 in the first half of 2021, and the average passenger load factor increased to 75%. With the recovery of tourism demand, the passenger load factor continued to grow in the first six months of 2022, rising by 21.9 percentage points.


Alaska Airlines

Air France KLM

Wizz Air


Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air yesterday announced its financial results for the three months ended June 30, 2022. Wizz Air saw a surge in passenger numbers from April to June this year, carrying nearly 12.2 million passengers, a 312.4% increase from the same period last year. The average load factor was 84.7%, compared with 63.6% in the same period last year.


On the one hand, the growth in passenger demand boosted the airline's revenue, which jumped to 808.8 million euros from 199 million euros a year earlier. However, the cost of flying for so many customers also hit WizzAir hard, resulting in an overall quarterly loss of 452.5 million euros ($462.2 million).


Gol Aviation


Brazilian airline Gol reported on Thursday that despite operating revenue more than tripling from the same period in 2021, it suffered a severe second-quarter net loss of 2.85 billion reais ($544 million), compared with a profit of 2.85 billion reais ($544 million) a year earlier. $658 million, which the company said was heavily impacted by currency fluctuations.
