U.S. to raise retirement age for pilots to 67

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote next week on legislation, including whether to raise the retirement age for commercial pilots to 67 from 65, along with other aviation reforms.

In June, the bill in the House of Representatives was passed by the American Transportation Committee with a score of 63:0. The bill would reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) safety and infrastructure programs for the next five years. The current authorization expires on September 30th.

Proposals to raise the retirement age for pilots have faced opposition from pilot unions as well as U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who fears it would complicate operations.

Pilot unions say this will create problems with airline scheduling and pilot training, and will require pilot contracts to be reworked. Even if the proposal passes, existing international rules would restrict pilots over the age of 65 from flying to most countries outside the United States.

The Regional Airlines Association (RAA) supports raising the retirement age for pilots, saying it will help stabilize attrition by retaining more experienced pilots who, in turn, can fly new co-pilots and provide mentorship
