Wu Guanghui: C929 aircraft enters preliminary design stage, reducing carbon emissions by 60%
On October 22, the 25th Annual Conference of the China Association for Science and Technology opened in Hefei, Anhui. At the International Green Aviation Development Forum held at the same time, Wu Guanghui, chief designer of the COMAC C919 and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, shared my country’s first domestically produced large aircraft. The practical results of the aircraft C919 in the field of green aviation, as well as the green design concept of the C929 aircraft that is undergoing preliminary design.
"On the ARJ21-700 model, we have continued to reduce weight by more than 600 kilograms. Now the lightest seat weighs only 7 kilograms, and the international average is 12-14 kilograms." Wu Guanghui introduced that the overall carbon footprint of the ARJ21-700 Emissions have been reduced by 5.9%. In the early stages of C919 design, Wu Guanghui and his team proposed the design concepts of weight reduction, drag reduction, and emission reduction, adopted advanced aerodynamic design to improve aerodynamic efficiency, widely used advanced composite materials to reduce the weight of the fuselage, and purchased a new generation of aeroengines. "It can be said that the C919 is the world's first large aircraft to incorporate the concept of emission reduction into its top-level design." Wu Guanghui said.

At present, the C929 aircraft has entered the preliminary design stage. Wu Guanghui introduced that C929 adopts the green design concept of low fuel consumption, low noise and low emissions, and will adopt a series of means to reduce carbon emissions. For example, comprehensive modular avionics technology is used to reduce the weight of airborne equipment; advanced aerodynamic technologies such as new generation supercritical wings and variable camber wings are used to improve aerodynamic efficiency; the amount of advanced composite materials is increased to more than 50% to reduce the size of the aircraft. Structural weight; using high bypass ratio, low-noise turbofan engines and extensive use of biofuels to achieve lower fuel consumption in the cruise segment. "Compared with older similar models, the C919 can reduce carbon emissions by 12%-15%, while the C929 sets a higher design goal to reduce carbon emissions by 60%."
