On November 20, 2025, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong was forced to return mid-flight on November 18 local time due to reports of a burning smell in the cabin from passengers and crew.

Flight data shows that United Airlines Flight 869 (operated by a Boeing 777) carried 336 passengers and 15 crew members and took off from San Francisco at approximately 1:15 PM that day. About an hour later, the flight turned back to the Bay Area.

Passengers reported noticing smoke outside the aircraft windows about 30 minutes into the flight.

A United Airlines spokesperson confirmed that the aircraft returned to "address the smell of burning rubber in the cabin." Emergency personnel were already on standby at the gate, and passengers disembarked normally. No one was injured in the incident.

United Airlines arranged for passengers to transfer to another aircraft later that day to continue their journey to Hong Kong.
