Air Canada pilots stage protest demanding better pay

 

Civil Aviation Resource Network, October 1, 2023: According to comprehensive foreign media reports, Air Canada pilots held a protest at Toronto Pearson Airport last Friday (September 29), demanding higher wages and benefits, and a new contract for 4,500 pilots. negotiations are still continuing.

 

Canadian pilots are pressing for higher wages and better schedules as their U.S. counterparts including United, Delta and American Airlines have made historic progress on new labor deals in the past few months.

Air Canada has slashed its flight schedule amid a pilot shortage, mainly in Western Canada. The airline's seat count from Calgary was down 27 per cent in November compared to the same month last year.

 

Charlene Hudy, president of the airline pilots union's governing body, said: "We have many issues to address when it comes to career advancement, job security and aviation safety. We must close the growing wage gap between us and our U.S. counterparts." Hudy added , currently, the Canadian Airline Pilots Union is actively negotiating with Air Canada, and these discussions are expected to continue throughout October.

 

Since 2014, Air Canada pilots have received annual salary increases of 2%. Canada's inflation rate in March this year was 4.3%, a 19-month low.

 

"We are still in the early stages of discussions and Air Canada continues to have productive discussions with Air Canada flight staff," the airline said.
