On January 16, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that on January 14, 2026, an Air China Cargo A330 passenger-to-freighter converted aircraft was successfully delivered to the Chengdu branch of Beijing Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Ameco").
The project officially commenced in 2023, completing the conversion of eight aircraft. This conversion achieved full lifecycle management of Airbus aircraft from passenger to freighter, establishing an efficient resource recycling model and realizing the preservation and appreciation of aircraft assets. This marks a significant breakthrough for Ameco in the field of wide-body passenger-to-freighter conversions.
Ameco CEO Shen Min stated, "The delivery of the first aircraft was the starting point of our cooperation, while today's full delivery marks the 'prelude to a new phase of cooperation.' Ameco will take the successful completion of this project as an opportunity to continuously improve its product system, systematically upgrade its service levels, meet the diversified needs of customers with higher-quality products and services, create more cross-industry cooperation models, and jointly inject new momentum into the development of China's civil aviation industry."
This project is jointly promoted by Ameco and Airbus's EFW. Ameco's Chengdu branch, leveraging its strong technical foundation, extensive industry experience, and excellent management capabilities, has assembled a professional passenger-to-freighter conversion management team. With support from headquarters, it provides Air China Cargo with a range of services including "one-stop" customized full-chain technical support, aircraft material supply, airframe painting, non-destructive testing, APU overhaul, accessory overhaul, and route operation.
During the conversion process, Ameco's Chengdu branch comprehensively optimized and improved its products, technology, management, and quality levels. It systematically improved the standardized full-process management system for passenger-to-freighter conversions, deepened its lean operation model and cross-professional collaboration mechanism, and built a professional team of over 100 people. Ultimately, all eight A330 passenger-to-freighter converted aircraft were successfully delivered on time and to a high standard.
Currently, the first seven A330 freighters are in operation, flying routes including Chengdu to Paris, Amsterdam, and Dubai, covering major cargo routes from Chengdu to Europe and the Middle East. The entire fleet has maintained a stable and efficient operating status, providing strong operational support for Air China Cargo to expand its international route network. Meanwhile, the successful implementation of this project has injected new momentum into Chengdu Shuangliu District's efforts to build an aviation hub, improve the layout of the entire aviation industry chain, and promote coordinated regional economic development.
This year, Ameco will launch a new round of global passenger-to-freighter conversion projects with EFW. Ameco's Chengdu branch will further optimize its business processes, provide customized services, deepen its strategic partnership with EFW, and jointly promote the sustainable development of the passenger-to-freighter conversion ecosystem.
