On the morning of Sunday, August 31st, an Air Canada Airbus A220 operating flight AC1038 from Denver to Toronto returned to Denver International Airport after the crew detected an unusual odor. According to the Denver Post, flight attendants noticed a "pungent odor" in the galley area, suggesting an electrical fire. The crew immediately decided to return and evacuated the aircraft using emergency slides on the runway.
The aircraft landed safely at approximately 8:15 a.m., and all 117 passengers and five crew members on board were evacuated. One passenger sustained minor injuries during the evacuation and is receiving treatment locally. The aircraft remains at Denver International Airport, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident.
An inspection confirmed that there was no actual electrical fire on the aircraft involved; only an odor similar to that of an electrical fire was detected, indicating that the incident was a false alarm. The FAA will investigate the incident, and the aircraft, registered C-GYLQ, was subsequently moved to another area of the airport.
One injured passenger was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries, while the remaining 116 passengers were returned to the terminal by bus and reassigned to other flights. Air Canada operates another daily flight between Denver and Toronto, departing at 11:25 a.m.; Star Alliance partner United Airlines also operates two daily flights on the route.
Although C-GYLQ was not damaged in the incident, the aircraft requires replacement of its emergency slides. This could cost Air Canada tens of thousands of dollars, and the aircraft has remained at Denver Airport since the incident, awaiting the replacement of the slides.
