On September 10 (local time), an EasyJet airliner caught fire while taxiing at Milan Malpensa Airport in Italy. All 146 passengers on board were evacuated, with two sustaining minor abrasions during the process. Flight operations at the airport were temporarily suspended due to the incident.
According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the flight involved was EasyJet flight U23905, which was scheduled to fly from Milan Malpensa Airport to Prague, Czech Republic. Smoke appeared on board while the aircraft was taxiing.
The aircraft involved was an Airbus A320 with the registration number OE-IVS. The flight was originally scheduled to depart at approximately 17:31 local time, but the plane came to a halt after taxiing toward the runway. The flight crew subsequently declared an emergency, and airport fire and emergency personnel quickly arrived at the scene.
The airport immediately initiated emergency response procedures, and the 146 passengers on board evacuated via emergency slides on both sides of the aircraft. Two passengers sustained minor abrasions during the evacuation, while the others were uninjured.
Preliminary Information: Suspected Power Bank Overheating
An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway. Italian media reports indicate that preliminary information suggests the fire may be linked to a power bank in a passenger's carry-on luggage. It is reported that the power bank may have overheated inside the luggage and ignited, subsequently causing smoke to fill the cabin. However, this remains preliminary information, and relevant authorities have not yet released a final conclusion; therefore, it cannot be confirmed at this stage that the power bank was the definitive cause of the fire.
Malpensa Airport Operations Temporarily Suspended
Following the incident, the airport immediately suspended flight operations to facilitate firefighting efforts, safety inspections, and the handling of the affected aircraft. Italian media reported that airport operations were halted for approximately one hour. Flight operations gradually resumed around 18:30 local time, starting with the reopening of Runway 35L, followed by a phased return to full operations. During the suspension, some flights scheduled to arrive at Malpensa Airport were affected, requiring delays or adjustments to flight plans. Airport operations have now gradually returned to normal. The incident occurred while the aircraft was still taxiing on the ground before takeoff; compared to a similar situation occurring mid-flight, this allowed the crew to organize the passenger evacuation more quickly and enabled airport fire services to intervene promptly.
