On January 10, Ethiopian Airlines officially broke ground on the Bishoftu International Airport, a $12.5 billion project that will become Africa's largest airport upon completion, with an expected opening date of 2030.
The state-owned airline was awarded the design contract for the four-runway airport in Bishoftu, located approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) southeast of Addis Ababa.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali stated on X, "Bishoftu International Airport will be the largest aviation infrastructure project in African history."
The airport will initially have an annual throughput capacity of 60 million passengers, expandable to 110 million passengers in the long term.
Abraham Tesfaye, Director of Aviation Infrastructure Development and Planning at Ethiopian Airlines, stated that 30% of the project funding will be self-raised by the airline, with the remainder financed through loans.
