The FAA currently has about 2,600 air traffic controllers in various stages of training. The U.S. Transportation Department said in March it would spend $117 million next year to hire another 1,800 air traffic controllers, in addition to hiring 1,500 by Sept. 30. Earlier this year, more than 12,000 people applied for the positions.

According to previous reports, the FAA agreed this month to lower the minimum flight requirements at New York City airports and Washington National Airport due to air traffic control staffing problems, and extended the deadline to October 28. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Office of Inspector General said in June that critical air traffic control facilities were facing significant staffing problems, warning that the challenges posed risks to the continuity of air traffic operations.
