1. Boeing CEO: 777X Certification Behind Schedule

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said Thursday that certification of its latest wide-body aircraft, the 777-9, is behind schedule. Boeing expects to deliver the first 777X in 2026, six years later than anticipated when the program launched in 2013.

2. Southwest Airlines 737 Diverts to Los Angeles Due to Engine Failure

On Thursday, a Southwest Airlines flight experienced engine failure after takeoff from Hollywood Burbank Airport, forcing the Phoenix-bound Boeing 737-700 to divert to Los Angeles. Southwest Airlines stated that passengers on Flight 1394 will be rerouted to other flights to Phoenix. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that the aircraft landed at approximately 8:15 a.m. Pacific Time and taxied safely to the gate at Los Angeles International Airport. The FAA will investigate the incident.

3. Heathrow Airport Passenger Traffic Exceeds 8 Million in August

London Heathrow Airport announced Thursday that its passenger traffic exceeded 8 million in August, marking a new milestone. Europe's busiest aviation hub reported a single-day record of over 270,000 passengers on August 1st, and Terminal 5 set a new single-day record of over 112,000 passengers on August 22nd.

4. Lufthansa May Increase Its Stake in Italy's ITA Airlines to 90%

According to a report by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter, Lufthansa is in talks with the Italian Ministry of Economy to increase its stake in Italy's ITA Airlines to 90% by June 2026. In addition to a performance-linked payment of 100 million euros, Lufthansa will also pay an additional 325 million euros (US$379.89 million) to increase its stake from its current 41%.

Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan said Thursday that the company is considering launching long-haul international routes and establishing premium airport lounges as part of its business transformation strategy. 6. British Airways 777 Flight to Hyderabad Returns Due to Technical Issue

In the early morning hours of September 10, British Airways flight BA277, a Boeing 777 bound for Hyderabad, India, took off from London Heathrow Airport. Shortly after takeoff, a technical issue was detected and the flight was forced to return to its departure airport. British Airways has not provided specific details about the issue, but it confirmed that the aircraft returned safely.
