1. Turkish Airlines Prepares to Make a Binding Share Offer for Air Europa
A Turkish Airlines executive stated during Wednesday's earnings call that the airline remains very interested in acquiring a stake in Spain's Air Europa and is preparing a binding offer. "We are ready to make a binding offer very soon," the executive said. "However, we are not at that stage yet. Once the board approves and a decision is made, we will make a public announcement."
2. Embraer Remains Hopeful of New US Orders Despite Tariffs
Embraer CEO Francisco Gomes Neto is confident the company will be able to sell its E2 regional jets to US airlines, but he acknowledged that US tariffs on Brazilian goods could negatively impact Embraer's efforts to secure a breakthrough first order. Last week, US President Trump excluded aircraft from the 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, but Embraer's aircraft still face the 10% tariff imposed in April. 3. Russia's Effort to Lease Aircraft from Ethiopia Failed
As Russia's aviation industry continues to be isolated due to sanctions, Russia recently attempted to lease aircraft from Ethiopia to bolster its struggling commercial fleet, but the effort ultimately failed. In late July, officials from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) rejected a Russian delegation's request for an aircraft lease, stating that they lacked the authority to instruct Ethiopian Airlines to do so.
4. Air Canada Offers 32.5% Pay Raise for Flight Attendants in Contract Negotiations
To avoid a strike, Air Canada has offered an overall pay raise of more than 30% over four years to its flight attendants, according to sources familiar with the matter. The union representing more than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants announced on Tuesday that members voted 99.7% in favor of a strike resolution, with the strike set to begin as early as August 16.
5. UK regulators conclude investigation into American Airlines-IAG transatlantic partnership
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced Wednesday that it had accepted commitments from American Airlines and IAG (the parent company of British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus), approving the revised transatlantic partnership between American, British Airways, and other airlines. The CMA launched an investigation in 2018, citing concerns that the agreement could harm competition on routes between London and several US cities.
6. Turkish companies and others to invest $4 billion in Damascus Airport expansion
An international consortium, including Turkey's Kalyon Holding, Cengiz Holding, and TAV Airports, recently signed a $4 billion agreement with the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority to expand Damascus International Airport, aiming to increase the airport's annual passenger capacity to 31 million within eight years.
7. Southwest Airlines adds second OTA partner
