Civil Aviation Resources Network, November 5, 2024: According to Reuters, the Irish High Court said on the 4th that it prohibited the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) from limiting passenger traffic at Dublin Airport next summer. Previously, the regulator set a cap to comply with planning restrictions.

According to reports, Dublin Airport carries about 80% of Ireland's air passengers. In 2007, when planners approved the construction of the second terminal, they capped the airport's annual passenger traffic at 32 million, partly to ease local road congestion.

Last month, the IAA stipulated that the peak period seat capacity from March to October 2025 would be capped at 25.2 million, a year-on-year decrease of about 5%.

Several airlines, including Ryanair, Ireland's largest airline, applied to the court to suspend summer restrictions. Ryanair said the ruling paved the way for the case to be submitted to the European Court of Justice and was "confident" that the European Court of Justice would lift broader passenger traffic restrictions.

According to previous reports, the reduction of 1 million passengers to meet the restrictions will lead to the loss of 1,000 jobs including airlines and ground handling. Due to the significant reduction in the number of passengers, thousands of tourism jobs will be lost next year.
