On August 21, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that on Thursday (August 20), local time, employees at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel suddenly went on strike. They closed all check-in counters an hour early, stating that the airport was in a "crisis state" due to operational difficulties, challenges in baggage handling, and a shortage of parking spaces.
Most flights scheduled to depart from Ben Gurion that day were to take off without any baggage. Flights at Ben Gurion Airport were suspended from 2:00 PM.
The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) stated that the strike, initiated at the direction of the union, affected airport operations and passenger services.
More than 610 flights were expected to take off and land that day, with approximately 107,000 passengers passing through Ben Gurion Airport.
The Israel Public Transport Authority confirmed that its management had instructed employees to "immediately cease any actions that impair normal operations and fully restore normal operations."
The Israeli Ministry of Finance estimates the total losses from the strike to be between 25 million and 30 million shekels, including lost passenger time, airline operating costs, airport authority revenue losses, cargo/supply chain disruptions, and additional tourism-related costs.
