On April 12, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that, according to local Irish media, on Saturday, a man was arrested by police after allegedly trespassing into a restricted area at Shannon Airport in County Clare, climbing the wing of a US military aircraft, and attacking the fuselage with an axe. This incident has once again brought the airport's security issues to the forefront.

Irish police reported that the man, approximately 40 years old, entered the restricted area of the airport before 11:00 AM and was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released.

According to Irish media reports, the attacked military aircraft was a US Air Force C-130 Hercules transport plane. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was parked on a secluded taxiway and was not in takeoff or landing mode.

Video circulating online shows a man dressed in dark clothing walking along the wing of the aircraft, moving on key areas such as the engine and fuselage connections, exhibiting clear signs of deliberate sabotage. The video has drawn widespread attention online.

This security breach directly led to a brief shutdown of Shannon Airport. An airport spokesperson stated that the airport initiated operational suspension procedures at approximately 9:50 AM and, after emergency measures, resumed normal operations at 10:15 AM, with a shutdown lasting approximately 25 minutes.

According to the Irish Daily News, the brief airport closure caused minor disruptions to flight operations: two departing flights were delayed, and an arriving flight, after arriving over the airport at approximately 10:20 AM, was forced to circle and wait until the airport resumed operations before landing safely.

Following the incident, multiple forces responded swiftly: airport police, the Irish Police Service, and the Irish Defence Force personnel arrived at the scene immediately. Armed police and special forces were also deployed to conduct comprehensive control and search operations. In addition, officials conducted a thorough search of the area surrounding the airport, focusing on investigating routes taken by suspects to illegally enter restricted areas; the search is still ongoing.
