According to a Hong Kong China News Agency report on Saturday (May 20), Liu Minyi, chairman of the Hong Kong Airline Service Providers Association, which provides airport support services, said in an interview that according to Hong Kong Airport Authority data, there are currently about 53,000 employees in Hong Kong Airport. That's 25,000 fewer employees than the pre-pandemic figure of 78,000.

She predicts that when the new airport system is fully launched next year, the airport will need to hire an additional 70,000 people. She urges the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government to optimize the system for importing foreign talents in the aviation industry on the premise of ensuring local employment, so as to alleviate the labor shortage in the industry.

Liu Minyi said that airport service companies have continuously strengthened their recruitment efforts. Some companies have increased the treatment of new employees by more than 10% compared with before the epidemic, and are actively retaining current employees. However, many airport service companies still have a shortage of three or four adults.

Li Junting, chairman of the Hong Kong International Airport Airlines Committee, said that before the epidemic, there were about 120 airlines operating routes in Hong Kong, connecting more than 200 destinations around the world. Although about 120 airlines have flown to Hong Kong to connect 150 destinations from January to March this year, due to manpower shortage, the current flight movements and passenger traffic have remained at 60% and 40% of pre-epidemic levels respectively. .

In order to solve the problem of manpower shortage in many industries in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong government earlier expanded the "talent list" to cover nine major industries and 51 professional occupations, but the aviation industry was not included in the list.

Some people in the aviation industry said that since the beginning of this year, Hong Kong has opened the door to mainland China and overseas tourism, and the aviation industry has embarked on the road to normalcy, but the shortage of manpower has become the biggest stumbling block. At least four or five small and medium-sized airlines intend to return to Hong Kong. However, due to the severe shortage of airport service companies that provide passenger luggage and boarding support, airlines will eventually transfer to mainland airports to pick up and drop off passengers.
