News from Civil Aviation Resources Network on May 6, 2024: According to comprehensive foreign media reports, WestJet Airlines has issued a 72-hour suspension notice to AMFA, the union representing its aircraft maintenance engineers. According to the notice, work may be suspended as early as May 7, local time.

WestJet President Diederik Pen said: "The decision to issue a shutdown notice was not made lightly, and we deeply regret and apologize for the uncertainty it has caused to our passengers and some regions."

WestJet has been negotiating a new contract with the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Union (AMFA) since September 2023.

Diederik Pen said: "Despite our unwavering commitment to reaching a collective agreement, AMFA publicly issued a strike vote last week and publicly instructed passengers to fly with other airlines. We cannot allow this unpredictable situation to continue to develop."

It said in a statement: "WestJet has submitted an offer to AMFA. WestJet's aircraft maintenance engineers will become the highest-paid engineers in Canada, and the cumulative salary increase during the collective agreement period will exceed 20%."

WestJet does not expect any travel disruptions as a result of the strike.
