According to CCTV News, on April 4th, the AEP100 megawatt-class hydrogen fuel cell turboprop engine, independently developed by the Hunan Power Machinery Research Institute of the Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC), successfully completed its maiden flight at Zhuzhou Lusong Airport, equipped with a 7.5-ton unmanned transport aircraft.

This is reportedly the world's first test flight of a megawatt-class hydrogen fuel cell turboprop engine. Throughout the flight, the engine operated normally and was in good condition. The flight time was 16 minutes, the flight distance was 36 kilometers, the flight speed was 220 kilometers per hour, and the altitude was 300 meters. After completing the scheduled flight maneuvers, it returned smoothly, marking a complete success for the maiden flight.

Experts from AECC explained that this successful maiden flight represents a significant leap from the technological to the engineering stages of independently developing a megawatt-class hydrogen fuel cell aero-engine. It signifies that my country has established a complete technology chain in the field of hydrogen fuel cell aero-engines, from core components to overall engine integration. It verifies the engineering reliability of the hydrogen fuel cell power system and the flight platform, laying the foundation for the subsequent industrial application of hydrogen energy in aviation. This is a crucial breakthrough in my country's green aviation power development, moving from technological exploration to engineering practice.

news-1-1

Experts from the Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC) stated that as the cost of green hydrogen production further decreases, the economic and energy security advantages of hydrogen-powered aviation will gradually become apparent. Hydrogen fuel cell aircraft engine technology is expected to be first applied in low-altitude economic sectors such as unmanned aerial cargo transport and island logistics, and will gradually expand to manned regional and mainline aircraft. This technology will drive the coordinated upgrading of upstream green hydrogen production, midstream storage and refueling infrastructure, and downstream high-end equipment and new materials industries, continuously promoting the green, low-carbon, and high-quality development of my country's aviation industry.
