On August 7, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that Indian police stated on August 6 that a man was arrested for allegedly attempting to open an emergency exit door during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi, causing panic among passengers.
According to police reports, the man, 36-year-old Jamsheer Athanikkal, was traveling on Batik Air flight OD231 (operated by a Boeing 737) from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi on the evening of August 5.
Between 9:30 PM and 11:05 PM that evening, during the flight, Jamsheer kicked and broke the interior window panel of the emergency exit and attempted to force open the door, while also threatening fellow passengers and crew.
Fortunately, other passengers and crew intervened in time to subdue him, a potentially serious incident was averted.
After the flight safely arrived in Kochi in the early morning of August 6, Jamsheer was detained by the Kerala police.
Police stated that a detailed investigation into the case is underway.
Fellow passenger Matty Mathew posted a video of the incident on social media.
In her post, she stated that most passengers were asleep when they were suddenly awakened by the sound of airflow rushing into the cabin. They then discovered that a passenger sitting in the emergency exit row had broken a window and was attempting to open the cabin door. However, due to the aircraft's design and cabin pressure, the door could not be opened.
Fellow passengers and Baze Air crew members quickly intervened and restrained the man to prevent the situation from escalating.
Mathew said, "It was an extremely terrifying experience, but thankfully we are all safe."
