Malaysia Airlines Group (MAG) announced on Friday (August 7) that it has ordered mandatory drug testing for all pilots of its airlines and will implement stricter screening.
This comes after a Malaysia Airlines pilot was arrested in July on suspicion of drug trafficking in Indonesia. Pilot arrested for suspected drug use! Airlines responds!
The 39-year-old MAG pilot was detained on July 28 after Indonesian authorities found 26 kilograms of the hallucinogenic drug MDMA in his luggage upon arrival in Jakarta from Kuala Lumpur.
The Indonesian customs office stated that urine tests also showed the pilot had used cocaine and methamphetamine.
Malaysia Airlines Group stated that it has initiated the first phase of mandatory drug screening, starting with 1,260 Malaysia Airlines pilots, with testing to be completed by August 15.

We take any breach of safety standards very seriously and have acted swiftly to further strengthen mandatory drug screening for all on-duty pilots. While this isolated incident does not represent the professional conduct consistently upheld by the vast majority of our employees, we will continue to strengthen our safeguards to protect the trust of our passengers and stakeholders."
